Next to loving my family, there is no greater purpose in my life than being able to help others. Writing my book The Law of the Garbage Truck and teaching its principles have given me the opportunity to connect with good people all over the world.
Everywhere I have been on our “Happiness, Success, and Civility Tour” people have been telling me how they’re struggling to find happiness. And when they do experience joy in their lives, they’re reporting how easily and how often it is interrupted by the bad behavior of others. People are frustrated by the incivility that surrounds them. And they feel that it’s getting worse.
The good news—and something that deeply gratifies me—is that people all over the world are feeling a new freedom to be happy and civil after they read The Law of the Garbage Truck or attend one of my events. When people recognize that they are not meant to be Garbage Trucks—they were not put on Earth to carry other people’s negative energy, nor were they created to burden others with theirs—they take control of their lives.
As we close out another week of our tour, and get ready for a new one, I want to thank you for being a part of our mission to make the world a better place for everyone. We all want to be happier. We all want to increase our success. We all want to increase civility. The Law of the Garbage Truck is helping us to not take personally the negative things we can’t control, so we can take greater responsibility for what we can.
Before I sign off, I want to thank you for the stories you continue to send me about how The Law of the Garbage Truck is making a difference in your life. Here is one I received this week. Thanks, Lana, for allowing me to share it.
I have often reminded myself about “The Law of the Garbage Truck” when I have dealt with situations that warranted its use. I would whisper those six words to myself and take a few deep breaths so that I could walk away from those situations. The last two years since my diagnoses of fibromyalgia and rheumatoid arthritis have forced me to take a step back and look at my life as a whole and learn to properly apply “The Law.”
In the summer of 2009, after my husband had been laid off from his job for nearly year, all of our money problems crashed down all at once. My husband became depressed, shut me out, and left me to pick up the pieces. Everything that could go wrong went wrong from the beginning of July until the end of August. Along with everything that goes wrong come people who make things worse for the person dealing with the situation. I was knee deep in bills, trying to keep our home, trying to keep our utilities on, trying to feed our kids, my was health failing, and no one that I came across was helpful. Every debt that I was dealing with was personal to the person I was discussing the debt with.
After I had gotten off the phone with one debt collector who basically told me he would “take my home,” (being in the legal field, I knew that wasn’t true but needless to say, the circumstances were not good) I was in tears and near panic when I picked up the phone to call my sister. She told me to remember “The Law of the Garbage Truck.” She reminded me how often I had applied it to my life in the past and how I had forgotten it in the last few months. I came across many people after that as a result of the financial situation we were in, but taking a few deeps breaths and whispering those words made each situation easier to handle.
My husband eventually found a job, my health has improved, I was able to save our home and crawl out of that financial mess, and “The Law” is not something I have forgotten. It is something that I apply to every aspect of my life. Thank you, David.
Thanks again, Lana, for sharing your story.
Together, we are making the world a more beautiful place. Thanks for being a part of our mission.
I’m deeply grateful.
David
