When I read the book I recognized times in my life I was a Garbage Truck and had been in the presence of Garbage Trucks. I found my habit of retaining anger and lashing out at the people close to me i.e. wife, family, co-workers etc. I also read of holding on to the “Why Me” and also feeling the future is doom and gloom. In addition, I realized the times when I have been the most successful and fulfilled in my work life, I had established a No Garbage Truck Zone and was practicing The Law of the Garbage Truck. These concepts definitely worked for me during my career as a firefighter. I was promoted to Captain in the Fire Department after 21 years. I soon realized I did not want to be promoted to the next rank, Battalion Chief, because of the negativity rampant in the department. I decided to remove myself from the politics, back stabbing, “brown nosing” and other things that went on at my job. I got transferred to the fire station I requested through a trade with another captain and a “friend” in administration. The rest of my career was the most enjoyable during my 37 years in the department. I had what I considered the best firefighting crews due to just a change in attitude from me and the ones working for me. These were not always the same personnel. I had complete changes of crew members many times over the last 10 years. People requested transfers and when moved to my platoon could not wait to start working and were very upset when moved away unless they received a promotion. I had the highest rate of Engineer to Captain promotions in the department. All my engineers, except three, made captain either while working for me or soon after. I was a captain for 16 years. All of this happened because I decided to not allow the Garbage Trucks to take away from the job performance and the fun my platoon displayed. I also gave my people their chance to shine, and praised them often. I have been retired for 18 months. Every time I run into my former crew members they still wish I was their captain. Teaching them to clear Garbage Trucks out of their zone was a gift I gave them and they gave it back to me.

I’m going to repost my review on the book site when I order a copy as a gift. I hope other firefighters, fathers, husbands and grandfathers will read the book.

I loved the book. You captured my attention in the intro. We all need to know how to let the things we can’t control pass us by , and you show us how. I am incredibly impressed at the influence you have had on people from so many countries, and how your message seems to be circling the globe from Africa, China, India, Australia, Europe and even Greenland. It’s mind-boggling. Many thanks, Lil
